This study examines gastronomic identity and gastronationalism together in order to clarify the contexts through which gastronomy is associated with identity. A review of the literature indicates that studies on gastronomic identity primarily address food within the framework of geography, climate, agricultural conditions, local products, and cultural structure, whereas studies on gastronationalism evaluate food in relation to national belonging. Although food is considered alongside identity in both approaches, the context upon which identity is grounded differs across studies. This distinction is not always explicitly addressed in the literature, resulting in an implicit association between gastronomic identity and national identity. To make this distinction explicit, the study adopts a bibliometric analysis approach. Gastronomic identity and gastronationalism literatures are examined through publication trends over time and keyword co-occurrence analyses based on author keywords. The findings indicate that gastronomic identity studies address identity through environmental and cultural conditions, whereas gastronationalism studies focus on food within the context of national belonging. Accordingly, the study demonstrates that gastronomic identity and gastronationalism cannot be evaluated within the same conceptual framework and offers a basis for distinguishing the identity contexts through which practices in the field of gastronomy are assessed.
