Abstract

“Interstellar” is a science fiction-drama film that tackles themes of time, space, and human relationships, merging scientific exploration with emotional narratives surrounding humanity's struggle for survival. The film begins in the near future, set against a backdrop of global ecological collapse, when Cooper, a former NASA pilot, joins a mission to find a new, habitable planet for humankind. Cooper embarks on a challenging journey shaped by the strong bond with his children left behind on Earth and the relativity of time. This voyage forces Cooper to face a difficult choice between the salvation of humanity and his devotion to his family. Through the lens of space exploration, the film addresses humanity's existential quest, sacrifice, and the guiding influence of love. This study aims to examine the film “Interstellar” within the context of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a postmodern therapeutic approach rooted in the cognitive-behavioral tradition. The core ACT concept of psychological flexibility is defined by the non-judgmental acceptance of internal experiences, staying present in the moment, and committed action aligned with one's values. Conversely, the concept of psychological rigidity denotes the opposite of this flexibility. Scenes and expressions in the film thought to correspond to these ACT concepts have been analyzed. In this study, the document analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods, has been employed. As a result, it is concluded that the film, which provides examples particularly consistent with the understanding of contacting the present moment and living according to values, will contribute to the psychological counseling process within the framework of the ACT approach.
