A TREASURE BOOK OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY

Abstract

The treasury of the Ottoman Empire consist of two parts, the treasury of Birun and the treasury of Endurun. İncome from these treasuries and expenses out of the treasury were recorded. Records were regularly recorded in ledgers. İn this stady, a notebook belonging to the treasury will be examined. The notebook belongs to the second half of the 17th century and IV. Mehmed period. When the contents of the ledger are examined, it is understood that records with diffirent contenets are brought together. İt is understood that the 3rd and 16th pages of the notebook are kept in the lists of the goods that came from the opposition and transferred to the treasury. This part of the notebook was published by us in another article. Pages 18 to 35 of the ledger contain the breakdown of treasury expenditures in general. İn addition, the content of this book include the list of various gifts, chests full of Money, belongings of the suktan, newly built items, purchased items and the list of those who bought horses from palace. İn this respect, there are no records in the book that there is periodic information about the treasury revenues in term of money. There isn’t consistency in the notebook in terms of the historicel process. On the other hand, on some pages of the notebook, the recorded data has been crossed out. There isn’t subject integrity in the notebook. For such reasons, it is thought that the notebook may be a dreft notebook. The data in the notebook provides important data in terms of Ottoman socio-economic history and cultural history researches since  it gives information about the structure and functioning of yhe Ottoman treasury and many items of the period. In order to carry out the study, it was obtained from the Ottoman Archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey State Archives. In order to carry out the study, the notebook was first transcribed. Afterwards, the obtained sections were evaluated under certain headings. The piece of transcripted text attachments is also about to be used for the way the notebook is kept and for displaying it to the sensitive recipient. It is intended and hoped to contribute to the structured area region.
